THE FOUNDATION OF THE OAKES FAMILY LEGACY began when Leonard Oakes bought land in the northwest corner of Orleans County. With this purchase, he forged the family’s beginnings in agriculture, and endeavor that continues today. Four generations have farmed the same land, establishing the Leonard Oakes Estate Winery in 2003, an award-winning producer of handcrafted artisanal wines and ciders.
The signature terroir of the region is defined by the soil structure and topography carved out by the glaciers of the last Ice Age. The natural escarpment, fertile soils rich with deltaic glacial deposits, and the moderating effects of Lake Ontario create a lush macroclimate for the vineyards, which produce a wide array of varieties with regionally distinct flavors.
The Oakes family, rooted in the region and their agricultural heritage, nurture the bounty of the vineyards. Generations of Oakes have ventured out into the world and returned to the farm with broad expertise and a unique vision.
