About Us:
Through a variety of viticultural techniques - planting on ridges, orienting the vines for maximum sun exposure and matching the trellis system to the microclimate, we ensure that our grapes ripen fully and develop complex flavors. By blending grapes from different sites and clones, we enhance the multifaceted nature of our wines.
Orogeny Green Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are blended from the grapes from several vineyards. Each site has been carefully selected to display the bright fruit characteristics of Green Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The grapes for the Orogeny Vineyards Green Valley Chardonnay come from some of the coolest vineyards in the subappellation. These low-lying, old-vine vineyards are dry-farmed and produce sparse canopies and low yields. Bud break is late and ripening occurs during the cooler months of the season. As a result, the fruit is more focused and intense than that from other areas of Sonoma County, with comparatively high acidity. Wente clones from vineyards along the valley floor contribute classic Green Valley Chardonnay flavors of lemon-cream pie, while the Rued clone lends more tropical notes, such as mango and pineapple.
The vineyards that contribute fruit for the Orogeny Vineyards Green Valley Pinot Noir are each only 8 to 20 acres, allowing for meticulous farming. The combination of cool weather and long exposure to the sun is perfect for Pinot Noir.
Each site has been carefully selected to display the bright fruit characteristics of Green Valley Pinot Noir. The vineyards, which are planted on ridges, contain different clones, each of which contributes something unique to the finished wine. Young Dijon clones provide bright berry fruit that shines through in the finished blend. The wine from one vineyard planted to a combination of clones (667, 777, 115, Pommard) is characterized by crystalline blackberry fruit and bright acidity. The Beringer clone (clone 15) found in another vineyard produces wine of great intensity, with deep blackberry fruit and substantial tannins and color%26#45;a terrific backbone to the blend.
