In 2002 Mitchell, Jim and Sandi's son, attended Surry Community College majoring in viticulture. He had developed an interest in grapes after watching his mom tinkering with kit wines in their basement growing up. Soon after, while living in Hong Kong for Jim's work, Sandi applied and was accepted to U.C. Davis for enology. She took her classes online while they lived abroad. It only made sense to the Ramaker family to start a vineyard and winery in 2004 on their property at Smith Mountain Lake. That same year Mitchell met and married his wife Michelle, a native of Smith Mountain Lake. Jim and Mitchell together began what would be a nine year investment of time and money for the whole family. Sandi is our very hard working winemaker, Mitchell manages vineyard procedures, Michelle handles sales and events, and Jim oversees the entire operation.
In 2010 the old farmhouse had to be torn down to make room for an updated facility. Aug. 1, 2013 was our long awaited opening day. We love this area and are devoted to making wine a pleasurable experience for each of our guests whether you are an oenophile or first timer.
