In the Beginning

The Second Sin Brewing Company founders - Mike Beresky, Phil Harris, and Jake Howell - have known each other since their days playing middle school football together.  Though they remained friends through the intervening years, the process of starting a brewery has fostered within them a bitter hatred for each other.

In 2011, after having brewed less than 10 batches of beer, they decided to follow their foolhardy dream of opening a small brewery, which was originally to be called Gluttony Brewing Company.

The Name

Several years after the plan was concocted, the trio started to put things into motion to finally start the brewery. The first order of business was to trademark the name Gluttony Brewing Company - which failed spectacularly. After a short trademark dispute, the founders decided it would be best to change the name of the company.

Originally, the name was a tongue-in-cheek joke, but it actually became deeply rooted in how they wanted their customers to react to their beers. Gluttony is defined as “habitual greed in eating or drinking” and derives from the Latin gluttire meaning “to gulp down or swallow.” Every once in a while you come across a beer that you click with. From your first sip to your last, every moment with that pint reminds you of just how fantastic beer can be, and when you’re done you can’t wait to have another. Ultimately, the founders decided to find a name that would keep this spirit alive.

After some research into the Seven Deadly Sins, they discovered that they were originally defined by Pope Gregory the Great. Pope Gregory also went as far to order them from least to most offensive to god - with Gluttony coming in second. Thus, Second Sin Brewing Company was born!

The Rest

The next few years were uneventful, but full of hard work.  Jake started brewing at Climax Brewing in New Jersey, then migrated to Neshaminy Creek Brewing for 5 years.  Our founders revised their business plan and set out to find a place to start Second Sin Brewing.  After some unsuccessful attempts to secure other buildings, they serendipitously took over Broken Goblet Brewing’s location when they expanded. We can’t wait to share our new space and beers with you!
