About Us:
Sovereign Cellars was licensed and bonded in 2004. Sovereign's goal has always been to create wines with great complexity for people who like wine, want a good value, and a consistent experience. Most grapes come from vineyards in Red Mountain, Columbia Valley and Horse Heaven Hills, three of the finest areas to source fruit in Washington State. Sovereign imports the fruit and processes it in its winery near Steamboat Island in Olympia. Denny ages the wine in American and French oak creating lovely bouquets and desired complexity in the 150 and 200 cases of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Syrah.
The varietals are housed under three labels, Finnigin's Daughter, Sovereign and Sovereign Reserve. Sovereign wines age in the barrel for at least 2 years and aren't released for 6-12 months, or until they are ready. Bottles are ready to drink, but can lay down for 3-5 years according to Denny, who feels that wine should be drank, not stored.Winemaker, Denny Gross, a former chemistry teacher made wine and beer as a hobby for 30 years. He makes wines that he likes to drink, Heavy Dark, Powerful Reds with a lot of character. Makes wine that go with food.
The name Sovereign Cellars came from the family sailboat a Concordia Yaul. Sovereigns other line of wine Finnegan's Daughter is named after Denny's niece, who provides the artwork. The Winery is a family affair. 2 boys Nick and Jonah help bottle and do the heavy lifting.
